Discover the Pristine Wilderness of Mahale Mountains National Park

IN LOVE WITH MAHALE.

Chimps Camps proudly invites you to explore Mahale Mountains National Park, a breathtaking sanctuary along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. Famous for its wild chimpanzee populations and remote beauty, Mahale offers a unique blend of tropical forest exploration, beach relaxation, and wildlife encounters—ideal for adventurous travelers, nature lovers, and families alike.

Chimpanzee Trekking

Mahale is one of the best places on Earth to encounter wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Home to over 800 individuals, the park’s forests allow intimate, guided treks to observe these intelligent primates as they forage, groom, and interact socially.

The habituated Mimikire chimp community, researched for decades, offers visitors a rare opportunity to walk alongside our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. Treks typically begin in the early morning and can vary from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the chimpanzees’ movements.

Forest Adventures & Nature Walks

What is await you.

Forest Adventures & Nature Walks

Mahale’s lush, mountainous terrain is laced with trails that lead through dense miombo and evergreen forest. Guided nature walks uncover medicinal plants, hidden waterfalls, and colorful birdlife, while also offering chances to see other forest-dwellers like red colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, bush pigs, and even elusive leopards.

The park’s scenic backdrop of the Mahale Mountains rising sharply above the lake makes every hike a visual spectacle, especially during the green season.

Summiting Mahale Peak

For adventurous hikers, summiting Nkungwe Peak—the highest point in the Mahale Mountains at 2,462 meters—is a rewarding challenge. The multi-day trek winds through dense rainforest, bamboo groves, and alpine meadows. Along the way, expect panoramic views, wildlife sightings, and a deep connection to nature in this sacred and remote wilderness.
